Rolex Buying Guide
Rolex in Brief: From London to Geneva
Hans Wilsdorf founded the business in London in 1905, registered the Rolex name in 1908 and moved the company to Geneva after the First World War. Rolex introduced the waterproof Oyster case in 1926, the Perpetual self-winding rotor in 1931 and the Datejust in 1945. The Submariner, GMT-Master and Day-Date followed in the 1950s, and the Cosmograph Daytona in 1963.
How to Choose a Rolex Model
Think first about where and how often the watch will be worn. For one watch that does everything, look at the Datejust or Submariner. For a dress watch with presence, the Day-Date. The GMT-Master II and Sky-Dweller suit frequent travellers, and the Daytona is the choice if you want a chronograph.
Then decide on size and metal, and try them on if you can: 36 mm and 41 mm look very different on the wrist. The table below summarises each collection.
Datejust: 31, 36, 41 mm (28 mm Lady-Datejust), Date with Cyclops lens, fluted bezel, Jubilee bracelet.
Day-Date: 36, 40 mm, Day spelled in full, gold or platinum only, President bracelet.
Cosmograph Daytona: 40 mm, Chronograph with tachymetric bezel.
GMT-Master II: 40 mm, Second time zone, two-colour 24-hour bezel.
Submariner: 41 mm (40 mm before 2020), Dive watch, 300 m, unidirectional bezel.
Yacht-Master: 37, 40, 42 mm, Raised bidirectional bezel, Oysterflex strap.
Land-Dweller: 36, 40 mm, Integrated Flat Jubilee bracelet, calibre 7135.
Sky-Dweller: 42 mm, Annual calendar and second time zone.
How to Read a Rolex Reference Number
Modern references have five or six digits, sometimes followed by letters. The first digits identify the collection and generation, and on six-digit references the last digit gives the metal: 0 Oystersteel, 1 Everose Rolesor, 3 Yellow Rolesor, 4 White Rolesor, 5 Everose gold, 6 platinum, 8 yellow gold and 9 white gold. Letters describe the bezel, such as LN for black or BLRO for blue and red.
So a 126711CHNR is a current-generation GMT-Master II in Everose Rolesor with a brown and black bezel. On modern watches the reference is engraved between the lugs at 12 o’clock and the serial number on the rehaut, the inner ring around the dial.
Rolex Papers, Warranty Cards & Serial Numbers
Older Rolex watches came with paper certificates; since the mid-2000s Rolex has issued a plastic warranty card that shows the model, the serial number and the date the watch was first sold. Rolex extended its international guarantee to five years for new watches sold from July 2015. Since around 2010 serial numbers have been random rather than sequential, so the card is the clearest record of a modern watch’s age.
Papers add confidence and value, but they are only one check: what matters is that the serial and reference on the card match the watch itself.
Rolex Materials: Oystersteel, Rolesor, Everose & Platinum
Oystersteel is the alloy Rolex uses for its steel watches, part of the 904L family. Rolesor, the combination of steel and 18 ct gold, comes in three forms: Yellow and Everose Rolesor add gold to the bezel, crown and centre links, while White Rolesor usually means a white gold bezel on a steel watch. Everose, Rolex’s pink gold alloy, was introduced in 2005.
Full gold watches are made in 18 ct yellow, white or Everose gold, and the heaviest metal, 950 platinum, is often paired with an ice blue dial. Rolesium, steel with a platinum bezel, is found on the Yacht-Master, and Cerachrom is Rolex’s ceramic for bezel inserts.
What Affects the Price of a Pre-Owned Rolex
The reference and configuration matter most: model, generation, metal, dial and bezel. Two watches with the same model name can sit far apart, such as a steel and a gold Datejust, or a Daytona with a white dial and one with a meteorite dial.
Condition comes next, including how much the case has been polished, followed by year, service history and completeness: box, warranty card, extra links and receipts. Our listed prices already account for these factors, watch by watch.
Rolex Buying Checklist
Whoever you buy from, run through these checks first:
Check that the reference and serial on the warranty card match those on the watch.
Ask whether the case has been polished, and look for soft edges on the case and lugs.
Confirm the dial, hands and bezel are original, with no aftermarket diamonds.
Test every function: winding, time setting, the date and any chronograph or GMT hand.
Flex the bracelet to look for stretch, and count the spare links supplied.
Ask for the service history and when the watch was last serviced.
Buy from a seller who documents the sale with a formal invoice.

How We Inspect Every Rolex
Every Rolex passes the same inspection before it is listed. Our specialists check the movement for winding, timekeeping and function; the case, crown and crystal; the dial, hands and bezel against the reference; and the bracelet for stretch and clasp wear. Chronograph, GMT and calendar functions are tested where fitted, and serial and reference numbers are matched to the documents.
The aim is simple: no replicas, no modified pieces and no watches with removed serials ever reach our listings. Where a box and papers come with a watch, we check that they belong to it.
Want a closer look? Ask for extra photos, a video or a condition report on any Rolex we list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are your Rolex watches authentic?
Yes. No Rolex is listed until our specialists have authenticated it: the movement, case, dial and bracelet are examined, and the serial and reference numbers and any documents are matched to the reference. Replicas, modified pieces and watches with removed serials are turned away, and every listing photo shows the real watch.
Is Omar’s Timepieces affiliated with Rolex?
No. Omar’s Timepieces LLC is an independent pre-owned dealer in Dubai and has no affiliation with Rolex. We authenticate and inspect every watch ourselves before listing it, and we back each sale with our own dealer warranty covering mechanical function.
Which Rolex models do you sell?
We deal in all the main collections: Datejust, Day-Date, Cosmograph Daytona, GMT-Master II, Submariner, Yacht-Master, Land-Dweller and Sky-Dweller, each with its own page, as well as models such as the Oyster Perpetual. Stock changes daily, so check the listings above or ask us for a specific reference.
How do I read a Rolex reference number?
On a modern six-digit reference, the first digits identify the model and generation and the last digit gives the metal, for example 0 for Oystersteel or 8 for yellow gold. Letters after the digits describe the bezel, such as BLNR for blue and black. Our listings always show the full reference.
What do Rolex box and papers include, and do they matter?
A full set usually means the box, the warranty card showing the serial number and any spare bracelet links. Papers support a watch’s history and affect its price, so every listing states exactly what is included, and anything missing is reflected in the figure.
How are your Rolex watches priced?
Every price is set watch by watch. Recent comparable sales and the live Dubai market give the starting point, and the exact reference, dial, condition, year, service history and completeness decide the final figure. That is why two examples of the same reference can carry different prices.
Do you offer a warranty on pre-owned Rolex?
Yes, our own dealer warranty covering mechanical function comes with every Rolex we sell. Ask us on WhatsApp about the cover for the watch you are considering, and we will explain it before you commit.
How can I pay for a Rolex?
Rolex purchases are paid in cash or cryptocurrency. A formal invoice documents every sale, and payment through informal channels or third-party apps is not accepted. That keeps each purchase on record for both sides, whether you collect in Dubai or take delivery.
Do you deliver Rolex watches across the UAE and abroad?
Every UAE delivery is free and insured, and it arrives the same day your order is confirmed; collection in Dubai by appointment is the alternative. For international buyers, shipping is organised order by order and quoted separately.
Can I view a Rolex in Dubai before buying?
Yes, but only by appointment, as walk-ins are not possible. You can book Monday to Wednesday between 9 AM and 8 PM, Thursday between 9 AM and 5 PM, Friday between 2 PM and 9 PM, or Saturday between 10 AM and 8 PM. There are no appointments on Sunday. Request a slot on WhatsApp.
Can I trade in my watch or sell my Rolex to you?
Yes. You can trade your current watch toward a purchase, or sell it to us outright. We make an offer at today’s Dubai market price within 60 minutes, and pay within 5 minutes by your preferred method: cash, bank transfer or crypto. We never take watches on consignment.
Can you source a Rolex that is not listed?
Yes. Give us the reference, dial and budget on WhatsApp, and we will put the search to our collector and dealer network in Dubai, Europe and Asia. You decide whether to buy only once the watch has been found.
