Rolex Datejust Buying Guide
A Short History of the Datejust
Rolex introduced the Oyster Perpetual Datejust in 1945 as the first self-winding, water-resistant chronometer wristwatch to show the date in a window on the dial. The Jubilee bracelet was created for its launch, and the Cyclops lens that magnifies the date followed in the early 1950s. The 41 mm Datejust II arrived in 2009 and gave way to the slimmer Datejust 41 in 2016.
Datejust References & Generations
On modern six-digit references, 126 marks the current Datejust 36 and 41, 116 the generation before, 278 the Datejust 31 and 279 the 28 mm Lady-Datejust. The last digit gives the metal, so always compare the full reference, not just the model name.

Datejust Sizes & Materials: 31, 36 or 41 mm
The 36 mm is the classic Datejust size and suits most wrists, including anyone who wants a watch that slides under a shirt cuff. The 41 mm wears noticeably larger and suits broader wrists or owners of modern sports models. The 31 mm and the 28 mm Lady-Datejust are made for smaller wrists.
Oystersteel is Rolex’s name for its 904L-family steel. Rolesor combines Oystersteel with 18 ct gold: White Rolesor pairs a white gold bezel with a steel watch, while Yellow and Everose Rolesor also bring gold to the crown and centre links. Everose is Rolex’s own pink gold alloy. Solid gold Datejusts exist too, often on the President bracelet.
Datejust Dials, Bezels & Bracelets
Dials are where Datejusts differ most. The Wimbledon pairs a slate dial with green Roman numerals, and the Jubilee dial is patterned with the Rolex name. Beyond those come sunray blues and greys, mint green, silver and champagne, plus dials with factory diamond-set hour markers.
Bezels are smooth, fluted or gem-set, and on Rolesor and gold models the fluted bezel is solid gold. The five-piece Jubilee bracelet, closed by a concealed Crownclasp, is the dressier pairing; the three-piece Oyster bracelet, with its Easylink extension, looks sportier.
Datejust Movement & Specifications
Current Datejust 36 and 41 models use calibre 3235, with the Chronergy escapement, a blue Parachrom hairspring and a power reserve of about 70 hours. The previous 36 mm generation used calibre 3135, with about 48 hours, and the Datejust II used calibre 3136. Calibre 2236, with its silicon Syloxi hairspring, drives the Datejust 31 and Lady-Datejust 28.
Today’s Datejust is a Superlative Chronometer, tested by Rolex to -2/+2 seconds a day once cased, and water-resistant to 100 metres with a screw-down Twinlock crown.
Datejust 41 vs Datejust II
Both measure 41 mm, but they wear differently. The Datejust II (116300, 116334) has a broader bezel, thicker lugs and larger hour markers, and runs on calibre 3136. The Datejust 41 (126300, 126334) has slimmer lugs, a finer bezel and calibre 3235 with about 70 hours of power reserve.
If you want a 41 mm that keeps the proportions of the classic 36 mm, the Datejust 41 is the closer match. The Datejust II suits buyers who prefer a bolder look. Against the Day-Date, the Datejust shows only the date and is made in steel and Rolesor as well as gold.
What Affects the Price of a Pre-Owned Datejust
Metal is the first divider: steel, Rolesor and solid gold Datejusts sit in very different brackets. Within each, the generation, size, dial and bezel matter, with factory diamond dials and gem-set bezels at the top.
Condition, year, service history and the presence of the box and papers then refine the figure. An unpolished case and an original bracelet with its spare links count in a watch’s favour.

How We Inspect Every Datejust
On a Datejust we start with the date: it must change cleanly around midnight, quickset smoothly and sit centred under the Cyclops lens. We then check winding, timekeeping and the screw-down crown, examine the flutes and case edges for over-polishing, measure Jubilee and Oyster bracelets for stretch, and confirm the dial, hands and markers are original to the reference.
Serial and reference numbers are compared with the papers and with the configuration Rolex made for that reference. We do not list replicas, modified pieces such as aftermarket dials or bezels, or watches with removed serials.

Is a Datejust suitable for everyday wear in Dubai’s heat?
Yes. With the crown screwed down, the Oyster case is water-resistant to 100 metres, so humidity, sweat and a swim are no problem. Rinse the watch in fresh water after the sea or a chlorinated pool, and have the seals checked whenever it is serviced.
