Not every expensive watch holds its value well. H1 2026 secondary-market data shows a clear split between brands that trade above retail on average and those that usually trade below it.
Patek Philippe leads on average value retention, Rolex leads on the share of references trading above retail, and Audemars Piguet is the strongest balance of both.
That does not mean every Patek, AP or Rolex is automatically a strong resale watch. The exact reference still matters more than the logo on the dial.
Luxury Watch Value Retention Ranking for 2026
Current H1 2026 secondary-market data shows:
Patek Philippe: +75.4%
Audemars Piguet: +35.7%
Rolex: +6.1%
Cartier: -13.6%
Tudor: -14.0%
Vacheron Constantin: -19.3%
Omega: -20.5%
Breitling: -28.2%
These figures measure how far above or below retail each brand trades on average. They are useful for comparing brands, but they are not a guarantee for an individual reference.
1. Patek Philippe: Highest Average Premium
Patek Philippe leads on average value retention, helped by strong demand for references such as the Nautilus and Aquanaut.
But the brand average can hide major differences. A Nautilus, Aquanaut and Calatrava do not behave the same way. Reference, material, production period, condition and completeness still decide the value of the individual watch.
Patek ranks first at brand level, but buyers and sellers still need to compare the exact reference.
2. Audemars Piguet: Strongest Balance
Audemars Piguet sits second on average value retention at about +35.7%.
It also performs strongly on the percentage of references trading above retail, making AP one of the best-balanced brands in the current secondary market. Around 67.9% of the references measured traded above retail in H1 2026.
The Royal Oak is central to that strength, but a Royal Oak, Royal Oak Offshore and Code 11.59 should never be valued with one brand-wide percentage.
For current reference-level pricing, see our Audemars Piguet price guide for Dubai.
3. Rolex: Strongest Across the Widest Range
Rolex's average premium is lower than Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet at around +6.1%, but approximately 75.9% of Rolex references in the dataset trade above retail, the highest share of any major brand measured.
That creates an important distinction:
Patek has the higher average premium. Rolex holds value across more of its catalogue.
Rolex also accounted for about 41% of total secondary-market value in H1 2026, with more than $4.29 billion in recorded sales.
That depth of demand matters because resale value is not only about what a watch is worth on paper. It is also about how easily a buyer can be found.
4. Cartier: Weaker Resale Can Mean Better Pre-Owned Value
Cartier traded about 13.6% below retail on average in the same dataset.
For an owner selling a watch bought new, that can mean depreciation.
For a pre-owned buyer, it can be an opportunity.
If a Santos, Tank or Panthère has already taken its initial depreciation, the next buyer may enter at a much more attractive price than retail.
That is why weaker resale value does not automatically mean poor buying value. Cartier can be especially compelling on the pre-owned market because someone else may already have absorbed much of the first drop.
5. Vacheron Constantin: Prestige Does Not Guarantee Resale Strength
Vacheron Constantin averaged about 19.3% below retail in the same data.
That is a useful reminder that prestige and resale performance are not the same thing.
Certain Overseas references can behave very differently from less liquid Vacheron models. A brand can be historically important and technically impressive without every watch holding close to retail.
What About Richard Mille?
Richard Mille is harder to reduce to one simple percentage because values can vary dramatically by reference, material and configuration.
An RM 030, RM 65-01, RM 07-01 and factory gem-set example can sit at completely different market levels.
For Richard Mille, the exact variant matters more than a broad brand average. Our Richard Mille price guide breaks the market down reference by reference.
Which Watch Brand Is Easiest to Resell?
Value retention and liquidity are not the same thing.
A watch can hold strong theoretical value and still take longer to sell.
In H1 2026, the median time online was about 34 days for Rolex, compared with 49 days for Audemars Piguet and 52 days for Patek Philippe.
Those are market-wide medians, not guarantees for an individual watch, but they show why liquidity matters.
For someone who may want to sell later, the depth of the buyer market can matter as much as the headline percentage above retail.
What Matters More: Brand or Reference?
The reference.
Brand rankings are useful for understanding the market, but they should never replace a proper valuation.
A desirable Rolex can outperform a weaker Patek reference. A rare Cartier can behave very differently from a standard production Cartier. Two Richard Mille watches sharing the same base number can still be hundreds of thousands of dirhams apart.
At Omar's Timepieces, we value the exact reference, configuration, condition, year, completeness and current market rather than applying one percentage to an entire brand.

Which Luxury Watch Brand Holds Value Best?
It depends on what you mean by "best."
Highest average premium: Patek Philippe.
Broadest value retention: Rolex.
Strongest balance of both: Audemars Piguet.
Attractive pre-owned entry: Cartier.
Most reference-sensitive at the ultra-high end: Richard Mille.
The mistake is assuming a strong brand guarantees a strong resale result.
Buy the reference, not just the logo.

Which luxury watch brand holds its value best?
Patek Philippe currently leads major brands on average value retention, while Rolex has the highest percentage of references trading above retail. Audemars Piguet performs strongly on both measures.
Does Rolex hold its value better than Patek Philippe?
It depends on the metric. Patek Philippe has the higher average premium over retail, while Rolex has a larger share of references trading above retail and a deeper secondary market.
Does Cartier hold its value?
Many Cartier references trade below retail on the secondary market, although individual models can behave very differently. This can make Cartier attractive to buyers entering through the pre-owned market.
Is a watch that trades above retail a good investment?
Not necessarily. Secondary-market prices can change, and value depends on the reference, condition, timing and demand. A luxury watch should not be treated as a guaranteed investment.
What affects luxury watch resale value?
The main factors include exact reference, configuration, material, condition, originality, year, box and papers, service history, rarity and current demand.
