Rolex Yacht-Master Buying Guide
The Yacht-Master Story Since 1992
Rolex introduced the Yacht-Master in 1992 as a sailing-inspired sports watch in 18 ct yellow gold. Rolesium, a steel watch with a platinum bezel, followed in 1999. In 2015 the Everose gold models introduced Rolex’s Oysterflex strap, and a 42 mm case arrived in 2019. The Yacht-Master II, a separate regatta chronograph, was introduced in 2007.

Five-digit references are the earliest. The 40 mm models then used calibre 3135 in the 116 series and calibre 3235 in the 126 series. The table shows the key references, including the gem-set 116695SATS.

Choosing Between 37, 40 and 42 mm
The 40 mm Yacht-Master is the heart of the range and suits most wrists. The 37 mm keeps the full sports look for slimmer wrists, while the 42 mm, introduced in white gold, wears bolder, especially on Oysterflex. The 44 mm Yacht-Master II is a different watch altogether.
Rolesium pairs Oystersteel with a platinum bezel. Everose is Rolex’s own 18 ct pink gold alloy, used for many of the Oysterflex models and for gem-set pieces such as the 116695SATS, and yellow and white gold complete the precious metals. RLX titanium, Rolex’s grade 5 titanium alloy, keeps the 226627 noticeably light for a 42 mm watch.
Bezels, Dials and the Oysterflex Strap
Unlike the Submariner’s, the Yacht-Master bezel turns in both directions, with 60-minute graduations in raised, polished numerals. On Rolesium models the bezel is solid platinum against a sandblasted background, while the Everose Oysterflex, white gold and titanium models carry a matte black Cerachrom insert. Rolesium dials have included slate grey and blue, and the 116655 and 126655 pair a black dial with Everose hands and markers.
The Oysterflex, launched on the Yacht-Master in 2015, is built around flexible metal blades covered in black elastomer, with cushions on the underside for comfort. Rolesium and titanium models come on the Oyster bracelet. Gem-set versions such as the 116695SATS, nicknamed “Tutti Frutti” for its multi-coloured bezel, are as much jewellery as sports watch.
Inside the Yacht-Master: Calibres 3235, 3135 and 2236
The 40 mm models of the 126 series and every 42 mm model use calibre 3235, with the Chronergy escapement and about 70 hours of power reserve. Earlier 40 mm references such as the 116622 and 116655 use calibre 3135, with roughly 48 hours. The 37 mm models run on calibre 2236, which has a silicon Syloxi hairspring.
Every Yacht-Master is water-resistant to 100 metres with a screw-down crown, plenty for swimming and sailing. The Yacht-Master II uses calibre 4161, with a programmable regatta countdown set through its Ring Command bezel.
Yacht-Master vs Submariner
They look related, but they are built for different days on the water.
Bezel: the Yacht-Master’s turns both ways and has raised numerals; the Submariner’s turns anticlockwise only, as a dive safety feature.
Water resistance: 100 metres for the Yacht-Master, 300 metres for the Submariner.
Materials: Rolesium, Everose, gold and titanium for the Yacht-Master; steel, Rolesor and gold for the Submariner.
Sizes: 37, 40 or 42 mm for the Yacht-Master; 41 mm for Submariners made since 2020.
Character: the Yacht-Master is the dressier, more relaxed sports watch; the Submariner is the pure diver.
Yacht-Master Pricing: What Makes the Difference
Material and size do most of the work. Rolesium, Everose on Oysterflex, white gold, titanium and gem-set pieces each sit in their own band, and the generation, calibre 3235 or 3135, matters too.
Then come condition, year, service history and completeness. Scratches on a platinum bezel, wear on a matte ceramic insert or a cut Oysterflex all affect value. We weigh every factor against recent comparable sales in the live Dubai market.

How We Inspect Every Yacht-Master
We start with the bezel, turning it both ways to test the click action, then examine the platinum surface or ceramic insert and its raised numerals. The Oysterflex or bracelet, clasp, crown, case edges, dial and hands come next, followed by winding, setting, date change and timekeeping. Gem-set pieces are checked stone by stone for original setting.
Last, the serial and reference are compared with the warranty card and any service history. Everything included with the watch, and anything missing, is written into the listing before it goes live.

Which Yacht-Master size is right for me?

What is Rolesium?
Rolesium is Rolex’s name for the combination of Oystersteel and platinum, first used on the Yacht-Master in 1999. The case and bracelet are steel and the bezel is platinum, with raised numerals on a sandblasted background. It gives a steel sports watch a subtle precious-metal detail.
Is a Yacht-Master or a Submariner the better choice for me?
Pick the Submariner if you dive or want the most versatile steel sports watch, with 300 metres of water resistance. Pick the Yacht-Master if you prefer a bidirectional bezel, precious-metal options and a softer, dressier look. Its 100 metres of water resistance is plenty for swimming and boating.
Is the Oysterflex strap a good choice in Dubai’s heat?
Yes, for most people. The elastomer is comfortable in heat and water, and the metal blades inside keep it stable on the wrist. Rinse it with fresh water after the sea or the pool, and check it for cuts near the lugs, as a damaged strap affects value.
Is a Yacht-Master suitable for swimming and sailing?
Yes. Every Yacht-Master is water-resistant to 100 metres, which covers swimming, snorkelling and sailing, provided the crown is screwed down and the seals have been maintained. It is not built as a dive watch, so for regular scuba diving the Submariner is the better tool.
What is the Yacht-Master II?
The Yacht-Master II is a separate 44 mm regatta chronograph introduced in 2007. Its calibre 4161 has a programmable countdown for race starts, set through the Ring Command bezel. It is larger and more technical than the Yacht-Master, and we can source one on request.
What is included with a pre-owned Yacht-Master?
Each listing states exactly what is included, such as the box, the warranty card and, on bracelet models, any removed links. When the box or papers are missing, we say so clearly and the price reflects it. Ask us for photos of the paperwork before you decide.
