Day-Date History: The President Since 1956
Rolex launched the Day-Date in 1956 as the first wristwatch to show both the date and the day of the week spelled out in full. It has only ever been made in 18 ct gold or platinum, and the President bracelet, with its semi-circular three-piece links, was designed for it. Its long association with world leaders gave the watch its own nickname, the President.
Day-Date References & Generations
The first three digits identify the generation: 228 for the current Day-Date 40, 128 for the current 36 mm, 118 for the previous 36 mm and 218 for the 41 mm Day-Date II, made from 2008 to 2015. The reference’s final digit tells you the metal: 5 for Everose, 6 for platinum, 8 for yellow gold and 9 for white gold.

Day-Date 36 or 40: Sizes & Precious Metals
The Day-Date 36 is the traditional size, slim and discreet, and suits smaller wrists or anyone who wants a dress watch under a cuff. The Day-Date 40 fits most men’s wrists comfortably and has more presence. The 41 mm Day-Date II, now discontinued, wears larger still.
Yellow gold is the traditional choice, white gold looks close to steel but weighs more, and Everose is Rolex’s own pink gold alloy, made to keep its colour. Platinum is the heaviest and most understated metal, and Rolex reserves the ice blue dial for its platinum models.
Day-Date Dials, Bezels & Bracelets
Day-Date dials run from champagne, silver and black to sunray green, ombré finishes that darken towards the edge, ornamental stones such as onyx, and diamond or baguette-set markers. Vintage lacquered Stella dials are a collecting field of their own, and the day disc is made in a range of languages, Arabic among them.
Bezels are fluted, smooth or set with diamonds. Nearly every Day-Date is worn on the President bracelet, which closes with a concealed Crownclasp so the clasp disappears into the links.
Day-Date Movement & Specifications
Calibre 3255 powers the Day-Date 40 and the current 36 mm, combining the Chronergy escapement with a blue Parachrom hairspring for roughly 70 hours of power reserve. The previous 36 mm generation ran on calibre 3155 and the Day-Date II on calibre 3156. Day and date change instantly at midnight, and the date sits under a Cyclops lens.
The case is water-resistant to 100 metres with a screw-down Twinlock crown, and current models meet Rolex’s Superlative Chronometer standard of -2/+2 seconds a day after casing.
Day-Date vs Datejust: Which Should You Choose?
The Day-Date adds the day of the week, written in full in an arched window at 12 o’clock, while the Datejust shows only the date. The Day-Date comes only in gold or platinum, almost always on the President bracelet; the Datejust is mostly steel or Rolesor on a Jubilee or Oyster bracelet.
Choose the Day-Date if you want a precious-metal watch with presence and history. Choose a Datejust 36 or 41 if you want a similar silhouette in steel or two-tone, at a lower price point, for everyday wear.
What Affects the Price of a Day-Date
Metal comes first, with platinum at the top, then the dial: stone, ombré and diamond-set dials sit well above plain index dials of the same reference. Factory diamond bezels add significantly again.
Generation, year, condition, the state of the President bracelet, service history and the presence of box and papers then move the price within that band.

How We Inspect Every Day-Date
A Day-Date has two calendar displays to test, so we check that the day and date change cleanly at midnight and set correctly from the crown. We examine the President bracelet link by link for stretch and worn pins, inspect the Crownclasp, and look at the lugs and bezel for over-polishing. Stone and diamond dials are checked closely against the reference.
We also match the serial and reference with the papers and confirm the metal agrees with the reference. Replicas, modified pieces and anything with a removed serial never make it into our listings.

Should I choose the Day-Date 36 or the Day-Date 40?
The 36 mm is the original size and wears slim and elegant, especially on smaller wrists. The 40 mm suits most men’s wrists and has more presence. Both current sizes use calibre 3255, so the choice comes down to fit and look, and a viewing in Dubai is the best way to decide.
How does the Day-Date 228238 differ from the 218238?
The 228238 is the current Day-Date 40 in yellow gold, with calibre 3255 and about 70 hours of power reserve. The 218238 is the Day-Date II, a 41 mm yellow gold model made from 2008 to 2015, with calibre 3156, a broader case and a wider bezel.
Why do platinum Day-Dates have ice blue dials?
Rolex reserves the ice blue dial for its platinum watches, so an ice blue Day-Date should always be a platinum reference ending in 6, such as the 228206 or 228236. That makes the dial a useful first clue, although we still verify every case and serial against the reference.
Can you find a Day-Date with the day in Arabic?
Yes. Rolex has made Day-Date day discs in many languages, Arabic included. Tell us the language, size, metal and dial you want on WhatsApp and our collector and dealer contacts in Dubai, Europe and Asia will be asked for that exact combination, with no obligation until we find it.
Is a gold Day-Date practical for everyday wear?
Yes, with a little care. It is water-resistant to 100 metres with the crown screwed down, so humidity and a swim are fine. Gold is softer than steel and will collect fine marks with daily wear, and the President bracelet benefits from regular cleaning.
Is a Day-Date without box and papers worth considering?
It can be, provided the watch itself checks out and the price reflects what is missing. The listing for each Day-Date says whether its box, warranty card and links are present. A full set adds reassurance and value, but the case, movement and serial are what we verify first.
How do you authenticate a pre-owned Day-Date?
Each Day-Date is examined by our specialists before it goes online: movement, case, dial and President bracelet first, then the serial and reference numbers and any documents, all checked against the reference. The metal markings on the case and clasp and the fit of the bracelet are part of that check. We will not sell a replica, a modified piece or a watch whose serial has been removed.
