Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847 and helped shape the early wristwatch. Louis Cartier designed the Santos in 1904 for the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who wanted to read the time without letting go of the controls, and the Tank followed in 1917. Later designs such as the Panthère (1983), the Pasha (1985) and the Ballon Bleu (2007) keep the range wide.
Shape, Size and Style: Choosing a Cartier
Start with the shape you love: square for the Santos, rectangular for the Tank, round for the Ballon Bleu and Pasha, and the soft square of the Panthère on its bracelet. Then pick a size, a metal and a movement. Most families come in several sizes, and the right one depends on your wrist and on whether you want a dress watch or something sportier.

Cartier W References, Serial Numbers and Papers
Cartier uses a catalogue reference that usually begins with W, for example WGSA0099 for a platinum Santos-Dumont. It identifies the exact model, size, metal and dial, and it appears on the warranty card. The caseback carries a model number and an individual serial number, which should match the card.
Many families share a name across very different versions, so always compare by reference, not by name alone. Two watches called Tank can differ in size, movement and metal.
Quartz, Manual or Automatic
Cartier offers all three. Quartz models, common in the Tank Must, Panthère and Santos-Dumont, are slim, accurate and easy to own. Manual-winding versions, often in gold or platinum, are the most traditional, and automatics such as the Santos de Cartier, with the in-house calibre 1847 MC, suit daily wear. Each trades at a different level, so we always state the movement on the listing.
Metals, Diamonds and Bracelets
Cartier makes watches in steel, steel and gold, yellow, rose and white gold, and platinum, and the metal changes the value far more than the dial. Diamond setting should always be original to the watch; aftermarket stones alter the case, and we do not deal in modified pieces.
