Rolex Sky-Dweller Buying Guide
A Traveller’s Watch Since 2012
Rolex launched the Sky-Dweller in 2012 as a 42 mm watch for frequent travellers, at first only in 18 ct gold. It combined an annual calendar with a second time zone, both set through the Ring Command bezel. In 2017 Rolex added Rolesor versions in steel and gold, and newer references use the updated calibre 9002.
Sky-Dweller References: 326 and 336 Series
Every Sky-Dweller measures 42 mm, so the reference mainly tells you the metal and the movement. References beginning 326 use calibre 9001, and the updated references beginning 336 use calibre 9002. The final digit identifies the metal: 4 means White Rolesor, 3 Yellow Rolesor, 8 yellow gold, 5 Everose and 9 white gold.

One Size, Several Metals
Every Sky-Dweller is 42 mm, with a broad case and a fluted bezel. It wears confidently on medium to large wrists. On slimmer wrists, a Rolesor model on a bracelet usually sits better than the heavier full-gold versions.
White Rolesor pairs Oystersteel with an 18 ct white gold bezel and is the most understated choice. Yellow Rolesor adds yellow gold to the bezel, crown and centre links. Full 18 ct yellow, white and Everose gold models sit at the top of the range, on a bracelet or, for some gold models, the Oysterflex.
Month Windows, Ring Command and Bracelets
The dial is busy but logical. Twelve small windows around the edge show the month, with the current one marked in red, and an off-centre 24-hour disc shows your home time. On White Rolesor, blue is the favourite for many buyers, alongside black and white; champagne suits Yellow Rolesor and gold.
The fluted bezel is not just decoration. It is the Ring Command, which turns to select which function the crown will set. Bracelet choices include the Oyster, the dressier Jubilee and, on some gold models, the Oysterflex.
Calibre 9001 and 9002 Explained
Calibre 9001 drives an annual calendar that knows which months have 30 or 31 days, so it needs correcting only once a year, at the end of February. It also runs the second time zone on the off-centre disc, and the local hour hand jumps forward or back in one-hour steps without stopping the watch. Power reserve is about 72 hours.
The updated calibre 9002 in the newer references keeps the same functions. Water resistance is 100 metres on every Sky-Dweller, with a screw-down crown.
Sky-Dweller vs GMT-Master II
Both track a second time zone, but they suit different owners.
Time zones: the GMT-Master II uses a 24-hour hand and rotating bezel and can follow a third zone; the Sky-Dweller shows home time on an off-centre disc.
Calendar: the Sky-Dweller adds an annual calendar with a month display; the GMT-Master II shows the date only.
Case and style: 42 mm with a fluted gold bezel for the Sky-Dweller; 40 mm with a Cerachrom bezel, often in two colours, for the GMT-Master II.
Movement: calibre 9001 or 9002 for the Sky-Dweller; calibre 3285, with about 70 hours of power reserve, for GMT-Master II references since 2018.
Choice: the GMT-Master II is the sportier everyday traveller; the Sky-Dweller is the dressier, more complicated option.
Sky-Dweller Price Factors
Metal and generation set the band. White and Yellow Rolesor, full gold and the newer calibre 9002 references each trade differently, and dial colour and bracelet then move the price, with blue dials and Jubilee bracelets often in demand.
Condition, year and completeness follow, but service history counts for more here than on simpler models, because the calendar and time zone mechanism is complex. Test every function on any Sky-Dweller you consider, wherever you buy it.
Turn the Ring Command bezel to each position and confirm the crown sets the date, the local time and the reference time.
Advance the date past the end of a month and watch the red month marker move to the next window.
Check that the 24-hour disc tracks home time correctly.
Jump the local hour hand forward and back, and make sure the date follows at midnight.
Inspect the fluted bezel for dents, and the bracelet or Oysterflex for stretch or cuts.
Ask for the service history, and match the serial and reference to the warranty card.

How We Inspect Every Sky-Dweller
Each Sky-Dweller goes through a full function test: every Ring Command position, the date and month change, the local hour jump, the reference time on the 24-hour disc, winding and timekeeping. We also examine the fluted bezel, crown, case, dial and month windows, the bracelet or Oysterflex, and check the serial and reference numbers against the reference.
Then the paperwork. The warranty card, service records and box are checked against the watch itself. Anything missing is stated in the listing, along with any service history that comes with the watch.

How does the Sky-Dweller’s annual calendar work?
