Richard Mille presented its first watch, the RM 001 Tourbillon, in 2001. Its watches are made in Les Breuleux in the Swiss Jura and are known for tonneau-shaped cases, skeletonised movements and materials borrowed from motor racing and aerospace. Many are developed with athletes, from Felipe Massa to Rafael Nadal and Bubba Watson, and worn in competition.

RM Numbers, Case Numbers and Papers
Every model is named RM plus a number. A hyphenated suffix marks an evolution or variant of an earlier model, so the RM 30-01 follows the RM 030. Dealer listings often add the case material, for example RG for red gold or Ti for titanium.
The case number engraved on the caseback is unique to each watch and should match the warranty card and any service documents. Check the calibre too: the RM 030 uses the RMAR1 and the RM 30-01 the RMAR2, and the movement should always be the one specified for the reference.
Titanium, Gold, Carbon TPT and Quartz TPT
Richard Mille uses metals and composites side by side. Grade 5 titanium is light and strong, while red and white gold add weight and warmth. Carbon TPT is built from many thin layers of carbon fibre, which gives each case its own striped pattern, and Quartz TPT does the same with silica layers in colours such as white, red and blue. Ceramic is hard and scratch-resistant but can chip if knocked.
