Rolex Daytona Buying Guide
A Brief History of the Cosmograph Daytona
Rolex introduced the Cosmograph in 1963 with ref. 6239, and it soon took the name Daytona, after the racing circuit in Florida. Early models were hand-wound. The first self-winding Daytona, ref. 16520, arrived in 1988 with a movement based on the Zenith El Primero; Rolex fitted its own calibre 4130 in 2000, and the current generation moved to calibre 4131 in 2023.
Daytona References & Generations
Five-digit references such as the 16520 belong to the Zenith-based era, six-digit 116 references to the calibre 4130 era, and 126 references to today’s calibre 4131 generation. The LN suffix marks a black Cerachrom bezel insert, as on the 126500LN.

Daytona Sizes & Materials
Every modern Daytona measures 40 mm, so the choice is about metal and how the watch wears. Oystersteel models are the lightest and most versatile. Rolesor pairs steel with yellow or Everose gold, while solid gold Daytonas feel noticeably heavier on a bracelet and lighter on Oysterflex. Platinum versions, with their ice blue dials, are the heaviest of all.
Gem-set models, such as the Rainbow with its graduated sapphire bezel, form a separate market with checks of their own.
Daytona Dials, Bezels & Bracelets
On steel references, the white dial with black counters is nicknamed the Panda, and the black dial is the alternative. Vintage exotic dials are known as Paul Newman dials, and the green dial on the yellow gold 116508 is called the John Mayer. Meteorite, mother-of-pearl and diamond-set dials appear on precious-metal references.
Bezels are Cerachrom ceramic or metal, always engraved with a tachymetric scale for measuring average speed. Bracelet models close with an Oysterlock safety clasp, while Oysterflex, an elastomer strap over flexible metal blades, is fitted to several gold references.
Daytona Movement & Specifications
Calibre 4131 and the earlier 4130 are self-winding chronograph movements with a column wheel, a vertical clutch and about 72 hours of power reserve. The 4131 adds the Chronergy escapement and new decoration on its bridges, which the platinum 126506 shows through a display caseback.
The case is water-resistant to 100 metres, with a Triplock crown and screw-down pushers that must be locked before the watch meets water.
Daytona 126500LN vs 116500LN
The 116500LN brought a black Cerachrom bezel to the steel Daytona in 2016. Its successor, the 126500LN of 2023, keeps the 40 mm size and 72-hour power reserve but moves to calibre 4131, frames the ceramic insert with a thin steel edge and refines the lugs and dial printing.
On the wrist the two are very close. Choose the 126500LN for the newer movement and, usually, a more recent year; choose a well-kept 116500LN if you prefer the first ceramic design. The older 116520, with its steel bezel, suits buyers who like an all-metal look.
What Affects the Price of a Daytona
Reference and metal set the starting point for a Rolex Daytona price, and the dial moves it sharply: white against black on steel, meteorite or gem-set on gold, and rare vintage dials above all. Generation counts too, as the 4131, 4130 and Zenith-based eras are priced differently.
Condition, year, service history, a fully working chronograph and the presence of the box, warranty card and links then refine the figure. Heavy polishing and non-original parts lower it.
Before You Buy a Daytona: Checklist
A chronograph needs more checks than a time-only watch. Before buying any Daytona:
Start, stop and reset the chronograph several times; the hands should snap back to zero.
Let the chronograph run for a few minutes and confirm the minute counter advances.
Make sure the pushers and crown screw down fully.
Inspect the Cerachrom insert for chips, especially around the edge.
Check that the dial, bezel and reference match a configuration Rolex made.
On Oysterflex models, look for cuts or cracks in the rubber near the lugs and clasp.
Ask for the box, warranty card, spare links and any service papers to be listed.

How We Inspect Every Daytona
Every Daytona is tested as a chronograph first: start, stop and reset, the 30-minute and 12-hour counters, and the screw-down pushers. We then check winding, timekeeping, the crown seal, the bezel for chips or wear, and the bracelet or Oysterflex for stretch or damage. Dial, hands and bezel are confirmed as correct for the reference.
Serial and reference numbers are matched against the papers and the case. A Daytona with signs of modification, a replica part or a removed serial does not enter our stock.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I buy a steel, gold or platinum Daytona?
For daily wear, steel is the easy choice; the current model is the 126500LN with a white or black dial. Gold models on Oysterflex wear lighter than gold on a bracelet and look less formal. Platinum, with its ice blue dial and chestnut brown bezel, sits at the top of the range and is the heaviest.
116520 or 116500LN: what changed?
Both are 40 mm steel Daytonas with calibre 4130. The 116520, made from 2000 to 2016, has a steel bezel engraved with the tachymetric scale. The 116500LN replaced it with a black Cerachrom ceramic bezel, which resists scratches and fading, along with updated dial details.
Can I swim with a Rolex Daytona?
Yes, it is water-resistant to 100 metres, but only with the pushers and crown screwed down. Never press the pushers underwater. A swim in the Gulf or a pool is fine on those terms; for regular diving, a Submariner is the better tool.
Which Daytona dial is the Panda?
Panda is the nickname for the white dial with black counters on steel Daytonas such as the 116500LN and 126500LN. The black dial on the same references has silver-ringed counters instead. Our listings name the exact reference and dial, so you always know which version you are looking at.
Do your Daytonas come with the box, warranty card and links?
Some Daytonas come as complete sets with box, warranty card and spare links, and some as the watch alone; the listing tells you which. Missing items are noted clearly and reflected in the price. Message us before buying and we will confirm the set for that Daytona.
How do I know a Daytona from you is genuine?
Every Daytona is authenticated by our specialists before it appears in the listings: they test the chronograph movement and compare the case, dial, bezel, bracelet, serial and reference numbers and any documents with the reference. We refuse replicas, modified watches and any piece with a removed serial, and the listing photos are of the Daytona itself.
Is there a warranty on a pre-owned Daytona?
