Rolex Submariner Buying Guide
From 1953 to 41 mm: Submariner History
Rolex launched the Submariner in 1953 as a divers’ watch water-resistant to 100 metres. A date version, the reference 1680, followed in the late 1960s, and later generations raised water resistance to 300 metres. Ceramic Cerachrom bezels reached the steel models in 2010. In 2020 the line moved to a 41 mm case with new movements.
Submariner References: LN, LV, LB and No-Date
The letters after the number give the bezel colour: LN for black, LV for green and LB for blue, from the French lunette noire, verte and bleue. The table covers the modern references most buyers compare.

40 mm or 41 mm, Steel or Gold?
Since 2020 the Submariner has measured 41 mm. Its lugs are slimmer and its bracelet slightly wider than on the 40 mm 116610 generation, so the two feel closer on the wrist than the numbers suggest. Both suit most wrists. The No-Date reads cleaner and more symmetrical, because it has no date window or Cyclops lens.
Steel models use Oystersteel, Rolex’s name for its 904L steel. Yellow Rolesor adds 18 ct yellow gold to the bezel, crown and centre links, and full 18 ct yellow and white gold versions sit at the top of the range.
Bezel Colours, Nicknames and the Glidelock Bracelet
Most Submariners have a black dial, so the bezel defines the watch. Green has the strongest following. The 16610LV “Kermit” paired a green aluminium insert with a black dial, the 116610LV “Hulk” went green on both, and the 126610LV “Starbucks” went back to a black dial under a green ceramic bezel. Blue appears on Rolesor and gold models, including the two-tone “Bluesy” and the white gold 116619LB, known as the “Smurf”.
The bezel turns anticlockwise only, a diving safety feature, in 120 clicks. Modern Submariners come on the Oyster bracelet with an Oysterlock safety clasp and the Glidelock extension, which adjusts the length in small steps without tools.
Calibres 3235, 3230 and 3135: Submariner Specifications
The 41 mm Submariner Date runs on calibre 3235 and the No-Date on calibre 3230. Both use Rolex’s Chronergy escapement and store about 70 hours of power, against roughly 48 hours for calibres 3135 and 3130 in the 40 mm generation. The 41 mm models are tested to Rolex’s Superlative Chronometer standard of minus two to plus two seconds a day after casing.
Every modern Submariner is water-resistant to 300 metres, with a screw-down Triplock crown. Ceramic-bezel models use Chromalight luminescence, which glows blue in the dark.
Submariner 126610 vs 116610: Which Generation?
From a distance the two generations look almost identical, so the decision usually comes down to movement, proportions and condition.
Movement: the 126610 has calibre 3235 with about 70 hours of power reserve; the 116610 has calibre 3135 with about 48 hours.
Case: the 126610 measures 41 mm with slimmer lugs, while the 116610 has the broad-lugged 40 mm case collectors call the Super Case.
Dial: the 126610 shows a small Rolex crown between “SWISS” and “MADE” at 6 o’clock, a quick way to tell the generations apart.
Bracelet: both use the Oyster bracelet with Glidelock, slightly wider on the 41 mm.
Condition: the 116610 left production in 2020, so wear, service history and completeness vary more from watch to watch.
What Moves a Submariner’s Price
Reference and bezel colour set the starting point. Green-bezel models, the No-Date and discontinued references each trade at their own level, and Rolesor and gold versions sit apart from steel.
Condition comes next. An unpolished case with sharp lug edges, a clean insert and a bracelet without stretch are worth paying for. Year, service history and a complete set with box, warranty card and links finish the picture, and we weigh them all against recent comparable sales rather than a fixed price list.
Pre-Owned Submariner Checklist
Use these checks on any pre-owned Submariner, from us or anyone else.
Match the serial and reference numbers to the warranty card, and the suffix (LN, LV or LB) to the bezel colour.
Turn the bezel: it should move anticlockwise only, with firm, even clicks and no play.
Look at the lug edges and case flanks for signs of heavy polishing.
Check the ceramic insert for chips, and that the lume on the dial and hands has aged evenly.
Unscrew, wind and set the crown: it should feel smooth, with no grinding.
Open and close the Glidelock, and check the bracelet for stretch.
Ask when it was last serviced, and have its water resistance tested before you dive with it.

How We Inspect Every Submariner
Our inspection starts with the bezel: anticlockwise action, alignment at 12 o’clock and the condition of the ceramic or aluminium insert. We then check the Triplock crown and tube, winding, hand-setting, date change and timekeeping, the dial, hands and lume, the case for over-polishing, and the Glidelock clasp. Serial and reference numbers are checked against the reference the watch claims to be.
Paperwork gets the same attention. Warranty cards and service papers must match the watch, and anything missing is stated clearly on the listing. Aftermarket parts or a removed serial mean the watch is turned away.

Is the Submariner Date or the No-Date right for me?
The Date has a date window under a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock and suits anyone who wants the extra practicality. The No-Date, the 124060 in its 41 mm form, has a symmetrical dial that many collectors see as the purest Submariner. Case size, bezel and water resistance are the same, so it comes down to taste.
What is the difference between the 126610LN and the 116610LN?
The 126610LN, from 2020, has a 41 mm case with slimmer lugs and calibre 3235, with about 70 hours of power reserve. The 116610LN, made from 2010 to 2020, has a broad-lugged 40 mm case and calibre 3135, with about 48 hours. Both have a black Cerachrom bezel and 300 metres of water resistance.
Does a Submariner suit everyday life in Dubai?
Yes. With 300 metres of water resistance it handles the pool and the beach easily, provided the crown is screwed down and the seals are in good order. Oystersteel copes well with daily knocks, and the Glidelock lets you loosen the bracelet slightly on the hottest days without tools.
Black, green or blue: which Submariner bezel suits me?
Black is the most versatile and goes with everything. Green, on the 126610LV “Starbucks” or the earlier “Hulk” and “Kermit”, has the strongest collector following and often carries a premium. Does a Submariner need box and papers to be worth buying?
Not necessarily. Each listing says exactly what is included, from a full set with box, warranty card and spare links to the watch alone. A Submariner without papers can still be a sound buy once authenticated, but missing items are always stated and reflected in the price.
