Where to buy a luxury watch in Dubai

There are three realistic routes. Brand boutiques sell new watches at retail, but allocation on the popular steel sports references is limited and waiting lists can run for years. Mall retailers carry a wider mix, though stock varies and prices are rarely negotiable. Independent dealers hold pre-owned and hard to find pieces, and this is where most serious buying in Dubai actually happens, because the watch is in front of you and available today.

Whichever route you take, judge the seller before the watch. A dealer who authenticates in house, photographs the exact piece you are buying and answers direct questions about condition is worth more than a slightly lower price from someone who does none of that.

New means full retail, a factory warranty and a wait. Pre-owned means you can see, handle and buy the watch the same day, often at a price that reflects the real market rather than a list price. On quieter references the opposite is true and pre-owned represents a genuine saving.

Authentication comes first. Ask how the watch was checked, who checked it, and what the seller guarantees in writing. Movement, case, bracelet and documentation should all be verified against the reference rather than assumed from the box. Then look at condition honestly. Sharp bevels and an unpolished case are worth paying for. Heavy polishing, mismatched links and a service history nobody can explain are all reasons to move the price, or to walk away.

Send the dealer the references you want to see so the watches are ready rather than sitting in a safe across town. Check whether viewings are by appointment and allow proper time for one, rather than squeezing it between flights. Confirm in advance what documentation you will leave with, and keep the invoice with the watch when you travel home. Know the exact reference

Model names hide real differences. What “full set” means

A full set is the watch with its original box and warranty card or certificate, and often extra bracelet links and the original tags. The card should carry the same serial or case number as the watch. Some listings call a watch a full set when only the box is present, so ask exactly which items are included and check the card against the watch before you pay.

When the watch you want is not in stock

Popular references move quickly, and many dealers, including us, source to order. A useful sourcing request states the reference, dial, bracelet, acceptable years and budget, and a serious dealer will not ask you to commit until a watch that meets those criteria has been found.

• What is included, and does the paperwork match the serial

• Can I view it in person before I decide
