The Royal Oak for Women: A Short History
The first Royal Oak designed for women arrived in 1976, created by Jacqueline Dimier as a smaller interpretation of Gérald Genta’s 1972 design. In 2016 Audemars Piguet introduced Frosted Gold, a hammered finish developed with jewellery designer Carolina Bucci. More recently, the quartz-powered Royal Oak Mini brought the design down to 23 mm, close to bracelet size.

Choosing a Size and Metal
The 23 mm Mini wears almost like a bracelet and pairs well with jewellery. The 33 mm quartz models are light and always ready to wear, while the 34 mm and 37 mm selfwinding references give the full Royal Oak presence; the 37 mm has become a popular unisex size.
Steel is the most practical choice for daily wear. Two-tone steel and pink gold adds warmth, while full pink gold (OR), yellow gold (BA) and white gold (BC) feel heavier and more precious on the wrist. Frosted gold has a textured surface that sparkles without any diamonds.

Most ladies’ Royal Oaks carry a Grande Tapisserie dial, in shades such as silver, blue and grey. On many diamond-bezel references the code after the first full stop changes from OO to ZZ, as in 15551ST.ZZ, which helps confirm that the setting is original.
Frosted gold is hammered to leave a surface of tiny facets. Polishing would flatten that texture, so worn or refinished areas matter more than on smooth gold, and they are among the first things we examine.
Quartz and Selfwinding Movements
The Royal Oak Mini uses quartz calibre 2730, and the 33 mm references are also quartz, so they keep time without being worn. The 34 mm and 37 mm models are selfwinding: the current 37 mm uses calibre 5900, and the earlier 15450ST and 15451ST use calibre 3120. The 37 mm references are water resistant to 50 m. Any quartz battery change should be done by a watchmaker who can reseal the case properly.

Both are genuine Royal Oaks with the octagonal bezel and integrated bracelet. The choice is really about how you wear a watch.
