Cartier Cheich Sets Auction Record at Sotheby's Hong Kong

A unique white gold Cartier Cheich has set an auction record for the brand, making it the highest price ever paid for a Cartier watch at public sale, fetching $3.4 million (US$3,413,124), about AED 12.5 million, at Sotheby's Hong Kong.
The result landed within the pre-sale estimate range, at 3.4 times the US$1 million low estimate, as bidders competed online, by phone and in the room.

The same auction also produced a record for the Cartier London Midi Pebble, a circa 1973-74 mid-sized yellow gold wristwatch considered rare in its own category.
Final price: $3.4 million / US$3,413,124, about AED 12.5 million
Pre-sale estimate: HK$8.0-40 million, about US$1.0-5.0 million (AED 3.7 million to AED 18.4 million)
Result: within the estimate range, at 3.4 times the US$1 million low estimate
From Paris-Dakar trophy to one-off commission
The Cheich began as a trophy created for competitors in the Paris-Dakar Rally, its case shaped to echo the blue headscarf worn by the Tuareg people and known by the same name.
Only four original yellow gold examples were produced, between 1983 and 1985, and Belgian rider Gaston Rahier, who won the rally’s motorcycle category in 1984 and 1985, was the only competitor ever given one.
Cartier's sponsorship of the rally ended after Thierry Sabine, the Paris-Dakar Cartier Challenge's founder, died in a helicopter crash in 1986, as recorded in Sotheby's notes on Gaston Rahier's yellow gold Cheich.
Cartier returned to the design once more in 2010, some 25 years after the originals, producing a single white gold Cheich; sources disagree on whether four Cheich watches exist in total with one lost, or whether this white gold piece is the fifth ever made.
Why this level of rarity matters for collectors
Sam Hines, Sotheby's global chairman of watches, noted that bidding for the unique white gold Cheich brought in collectors spread across different regions and bidding methods.
From a dealer's perspective, a one-off trophy piece like the Cheich sits apart from the serially produced Cartier families that normally circulate in the pre-owned market, such as the Tank or Santos lines.
At Omar's Timepieces, which buys and sells Cartier alongside its core brands, valuing a Tank or Santos depends on size, material and movement. A Small, Medium or Large reference, a quartz or automatic version, and steel, two-tone, gold or platinum all sit at different levels, a question we address when assessing what a Cartier is worth in Dubai.
What this record means for Cartier buyers and sellers in Dubai
This result concerns a unique commissioned piece rather than a production reference. The sale made it the priciest Cartier wristwatch ever sold at public auction.
For sellers in Dubai, the Cheich sale is a reminder that provenance and documentation drive value at every level. A Cartier with its box, warranty card and service history generally commands more confidence than one without.
Genuine pieces can still be reviewed even if those papers are missing.
Size, material and movement type all change how a Cartier is valued, whether it is a Santos in steel or gold, a quartz or automatic Tank, or a factory diamond-set piece.
These distinctions matter as much when selling a watch safely in Dubai as they do at international auction.
Cartier expertise at Omar's Timepieces
Omar's Timepieces is an independent dealer of authentic pre-owned luxury watches based in Nad Al Hamar, Dubai, and handles Cartier alongside its core brands of Rolex, Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe.
The business buys, sells, trades and sources pre-owned Cartier watches including the Santos de Cartier, Tank and Panthère families, and can source models such as the Ballon Bleu, Pasha, Baignoire or Crash through its network.
Its valuation and authentication process checks the movement, case, dial, bracelet and reference numbers against any documents provided.
Sellers can send photos and details of a Cartier on WhatsApp for an offer, which is the amount we pay once the watch is inspected in person, or view the Cartier pieces currently available.
Omar's Timepieces is an independent dealer of pre-owned watches and is not an authorised dealer of, or affiliated with, Cartier.

How many Cartier Cheich watches are known to exist?
Four original yellow gold Cheich watches were made between 1983 and 1985, and Cartier produced one further white gold example in 2010; sources disagree on whether the total stands at four with one lost, or five in all.
Who was Gaston Rahier and why does his connection to the Cheich matter?
Gaston Rahier was the Belgian rider who won the Paris-Dakar Rally in 1984 and 1985, and he remains the only racer ever to have received an original Cartier Cheich.
Did any other Cartier set a record at the same sale?
Yes, a London Midi Pebble from around 1973 or 1974, a mid-sized yellow gold watch, sold at the same Hong Kong sale and achieved its own record for that model.
